Life Scientist/General Engineer/Physical Scientist

This position is in Region 5, Air and Radiation Division, Air Toxics and Assessment Branch, in Chicago Illinois.

At the entry level of this position, you will:
  • Implement strategies to engage external partners, including industry and communities, in the resolution of air pollution problems, particularly in environmental justice and vulnerable communities. Work with staff and management to carry out and track projects designed to overcome these problems.
  • Evaluate human health and environmental problems related to air pollution, including air toxics, indoor air quality, and greenhouse gases, using reviews of scientific literature, analysis of emissions inventories and air monitoring data, modeling, risk assessment, and other techniques as appropriate.
  • Provide technical assistance on tools and techniques for measuring and addressing air pollution issues and convey federal guidance on programmatic requirements as necessary.
  • Implement strategies designed to increase public health and/or reduce pollution, through voluntary programs, education, coordination with federal regulatory and enforcement authorities, and other approaches as appropriate to produce measurable results. Voluntary strategies can include pollution prevention and controls, energy efficiency, clean energy development, and compliance assistance.
  • Assist state, local, and tribal governments with their efforts to identify pollution problems, reduce pollution, and meet regulatory requirements through technical assistance, cooperative efforts, or review of required actions.
