Throughline/Code Switch Intern - Fall/Winter 2022

Program Duration: October 3, 2022 - April 14, 2023
Throughline, NPR’s weekly history podcast, journeys into the past to better understand the present. In each episode, we explore the history of current events through our show’s signature immersive storytelling and cinematic production.
NPR’s Code Switch explores how race intersects with every aspect of life, from politics and pop culture to family and religion. We’re looking for a curious, self-motivated intern to help out with every aspect of our production. They’ll be writing digital posts, conducting research for the podcast and the blog, booking guests, pitching stories, and helping out with social media coverage.  
As an intern working with both the Throughline and Code Switch podcasts, you will join two small, highly collaborative teams. We’re seeking someone who’s curious and self-motivated. You will help conceive, shape and execute stories for these shows and their related broadcast and digital elements. You’ll be involved with every aspect of production, from research and booking to social media. 
  • Assist in producing podcast episodes
  • Write original blog entries and episode copy
  • Pitch stories and provide feedback in editing sessions
  • Book guests and arrange studios
  • Assist with social media outreach, episode fact-checking and research 
  • Respond to listener messages 
  • Other duties as assigned
  • LOCATION: This internship has the flexibility to be onsite at our Washington, D.C. or California office, fully remote, or a hybrid version of the two based on the intern’s preference. Must be planning to work from the United States throughout the internship dates. 
  • EDUCATION: Must be a current student in an accredited degree program or a recent graduate of no more than 12 months from the month of the start of the internship. 
  • Excellent research and written/verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work independently, quickly and accurately, while under deadline pressure
  • Demonstrated interest in news and creative storytelling
  • Committed to cultivating and diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace
  • Supports an inclusive and equitable workplace culture
  • Knowledge of/interest in history
  • Knowledge of/interest in race and identity
  • Experience or demonstrated interest in audio storytelling
40 hours/week, Monday through Friday, typically beginning around 10:30 a.m. ET for West Coast schedules
