Multimedia Intern, Visuals and Science Desks Fall 2022 - Spring 2023

Program Duration: October 3, 2022 – April 14, 2023 (28 weeks). The program will be divided between the Visuals desk (Fall 2022) and the Science Desk (Spring 2023)
 
INTERN WILL LEARN AND BE EXPOSED TO: Interns will work on both the Visuals desk (Fall 2022) and the Science desk (Spring 2023). This internship is an opportunity to learn more about the world of photo editing. Our goal isn’t to make you into a photo editor; we view this internship as a chance for you to understand what it is like to be an editor and improve your visual literacy, which can help you become a better photographer.
 
On the Visuals desk, the intern will focus on editing and commissioning visuals for stories for news, national, culture, politics and podcasts. They will also work on content for our other visuals platforms including Instagram. The visuals desk intern will work across the newsroom and podcasts. On the Science Desk, interns will edit and commission visuals for stories on global and domestic health, climate change and general science. As one of the largest desks at NPR, interns will have the opportunity to work with over 30 reporters, producers and editors. 
 
INTERN RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assists with the editing, layout and production of content through photos, video, illustration and animations for news, science, culture, Washington desk and podcasts.
  • Researching photos on wire agency websites like Getty Images and AP Newsroom; digging into public domain image archives; and sourcing imagery on creative commons for news and feature stories.
  • Works with the teams around the newsroom and podcasts to assist with visual story development including editing of staff and freelance photos
  • Shoot still and video for occasional field assignments or creative visual illustrations
  • Producing creative visual stories for social media, including Instagram posts and stories 
  • Routine administrative tasks including clearing image permissions
  • Attending editorial meetings
WHO CAN APPLY?
  • LOCATION: This internship will be fully remote. Must be planning to work from the United States throughout the Fall 2022/Spring 2023 internship dates. 
  • EDUCATION: Must be a current student in an accredited degree program or a recent graduate of no more than 12 months from the month of the start of the internship. 
REQUIRED SKILLS
  • Journalism, photography, or video courses
  • Excellent visual literacy skills, familiarity with AP caption style and basic understanding of image copyright.
  • Still and video shooting skills
  • Ability to work quickly, accurately and under deadline pressure
  • A self-starter who can respond to feedback and editorial direction
  • Ability to pitch and execute original story ideas
  • The ability to exhibit creativity and to show flexibility in handling different kinds of assignments
  • Ability to work with a team.
PREFERRED SKILLS
  • Video and audio skills a plus 
  • Organizational skills
 
SCHEDULE
Monday – Friday 9am to 6pm 
40 hours a week (could be some breaking news work on nights or weekends)
